Having Safe Discussions with Teens around Pornography
13 November
9am – 11am
Pornography has been on the rise with technology making it highly accessible with unlimited exposure to almost everybody. So what are the facts and resources available to navigate how to have conversations with our youth? We know that they are exposed at a much earlier age than 10 or 20 years ago and many seek porn out to “educate” themselves on how to have sex. How as adults can we better understand how they process this form of adult entertainment? What are the impacts for their relationships? How do we make sure our own opinions and values are not putting a dark shadow of shame on being able to have a conversation about pornography?
We can’t look away anymore. We know that young people are looking for a better narrative around sex than porn… Pornography is made by adults and for adults … even the most popular or ‘mainstream’ content can be highly problematic from the perspective of young people learning about sex, sexuality and respectful relationships…”
— David Shanks, Chief Censor, Classification Office, 2018.
We unpack the uncomfortable facts about pornography and more importantly help guide how to get the conversation started. There are wonderful resources available so let’s get schooled up on being able to discuss this topic and build critical thinking to help form resilience to problematic messages in porn.
